Alot of things on this page will be quoted from Toeper's own words. (the words in blue) As this memorial site is a tribute to him by all of his loved ones, I feel that alot of this should be quoted by his true thoughts and feelings.
Toeper was an amazing guy! He was soft and kindhearted but yet stern and adement on what he believed in. He admits he has made several mistakes in his life, just like we all have. "I have made many mistakes but I keep trying. My children are the reason I live and the best thing I have ever done. God is the leader of me and my family. Jesus is our Savior and we will follow him to our place in his kingdom". I know he is now in that kingdom that Lord has prepared for all of us.
Toeper was so proud of his children, Collin and Haley. He was always going on how Collin was able to rebuild a car with his own 2 hands only being 16. Everytime we would go pick Haley up or take her home, he always was looking for Collin to be in the front working on his car so he can see the progress his own son had done with working on the car. I'll never forget the time we pulled up, Toeper got out of the car and walked up to where Collin was, (under the hood). When Collin got in his car and cranked it over and it started, Toepers face lite up! He was so proud that day! When he got back in the car, he talked about it the whole way home. He was so proud of him for becoming the mechanic he is for being so young. He was also proud of Collin for his knowledge of technology. Anytime something around here would be messed up, he'd say, "I should call Collin and have him take a look at it because I know he can fix anything."
Toeper loved to read! This is a common love shared between him and Haley. They both truly loved to read the same books and share their thoughts on them. It was something I have never seen before between and Father and Daughter. That was something I found very admirable about them both. ......"I like James Pattersons' Alex Cross series alot. Most everything from Koontz. Don't care that much for Harry Potter movies but I absolutely love the books. I will admit, I am a huge Twillight fan. My daughter and I read them all at the same time. That was so fun because she would call me every night and talk about what we read and what was coming." I'll never forget the day he was off work due to the weather and he took Haley and Collin to see "New Moon". He was truly happy that day because it was very rare that the 3 of them would go hang out and do something fun together.
Toeper had a special place in his heart for music. He didn't have a particular kind of music that he liked, he loved all kinds of music. ...."all depends on my mood. My favorite classical piece is Beethoven's piano sonata no. 8 (check it out sometime, it's beautiful). My favorite composers are Beethoven, Vivaldi and Berlioz". .... He loved playing the guitar and piano...."I never had any lessons but I do ok". He didn't just do "ok". He was spectacular in playing his music. He actually wrote his own song for the keyboard, (it is the one that is titled "Toeper's Song" on the right side of the screen. Haley is playing it.) that is absolutely beautiful, and taught it to his daughter, Haley. There is not an actual "writing" of this song. It was all by ear. Haley picked up on this talent of his and he was so proud of that. So, he did more than just "ok" in my book. Haley recorded this song for her Daddy's service. I will never forget the first time I heard him play. I was talking to him on the phone and he thought we had said our goodbyes and hung up. I heard him playing his guitar in the background and singing to Guns and Roses. From that point on, I knew that this was going to be one of those guys that will sing to you if you ask him to and what girl wouldn't want that? The next day, I told him that I heard him and he had no clue what I was talking about. He was embarrassed...lol...but it was sweet to me.
There was a particular song that came out when we started dating called, "Whatever it is", by the Zack Brown Band. Everytime that came on the radio, he would crank it up and sing it to me. That song fit us perfect because sometimes people don't know the exact words to say how they feel about a certain person and if they do, they fear that it just wont come out right and so they have to just come out with what they know is true without all the mushy things that go along with it sometimes. I remember one particular night we were just laying down talking about our dreams and what our house was going to be like that we dreamed of building and how we were going to form our own Real Estate/Building company. We were going to name it "Magby and Associates"...lol.. and he started rubbing my cheek and just touching everything on my face and I started laughing and asked him what in the world he was doing and he said " Even in the dark, I can tell how beautiful you are." I believe that is the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me. This is the side of Toeper that only a few people knew. Those are great memories that will stay in my heart for a lifetime. It's the little things like that in life that really matter.
Toeper also had a love for fine Art. His favorite Artist is Von-Gogh. We had a book here on the History of Art. On his spare time, he would pick it up and just read it and learn more about the History on certain peices like Starry Night, which was his favorite and about backgrounds on certain artist and what inspired them....."I love studying artist. I would love to have even a grocery list by Van Gogh. I know it's cliche but Starry Night is my absolute favorite and I can look at it forever. I have found very few impressionst/expressionism pieces I have not enjoyed. I like finding peices with little or no previous knowledge of the work so that I can form my own un-influenced opinion and then compare my thoughts with others or the artists themselves. It is often surprising how dead on or far off my interpretation compares to what they were trying to express." I belive that he loved Starry Night so much because if you would just take a look at it, it is almost like there is no end to the sky and the sky looks so inviting. It's actually relaxing and peaceful if you look at if for a bit. Now he is in that place, that place that is inviting and endless.
Toeper was always out to make people laugh and tell jokes. When you were down, he would always try to make you feel better by making funny faces or quoting the characters from "Aquateen" and sounding exactly like them. ....."I require a popsicle every 15 minutes!". I know that those of you that knew that side of him and knew the "Aquateen" cartoon are laughing right now. That's just a tiny example of the things he would do. He was always wanting to do what the kids were doing. He was always out to make them laugh and have fun. He would purposely do something just because they would tell him he wouldn't. For example, one time during 5:00 traffic in the traffic nightmare in Catoosa, he got out of the car, went to the front and did the chicken dance at the red light just because the kids told him he wouldn't! He didn't care. What he did care about is to see the smile on Haley and Nick's faces. Of course I was totally embarrassed but was still cracking up.
He was always out to pull a prank on someone. Like once he put a single jalepeno in some sandwiches he was making for, (I believe about 50 people). Some people thought it was funny but He got in alot of trouble for that...he tried to justify it by saying "it was only a few, not all of them"..LOL!.....There was never a dull moment when he was around. Alot of people may think he done some crazy and immature things and he did but he did it so he could enjoy his life the way HE knew how. He didn't always follow the "rules by the book". He didn't care what others thought of him and his actions in that sense. I personally don't know many people that will do exactly what they feel inside that they want to do just for the simple fact of what everyone will think. I hope that others will post stories of Toeper like these because that is what will keep his memory alive.
